Care Aware: Advancing Awareness of Health Care Equity
Overview
Interactive Knowledge partnered with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy to design and develop Care Aware: Advancing Awareness of Health Care Equity, a series of online learning modules focused on health disparities in pharmacy practice.
Serving as an extension of the UNC project team, Interactive Knowledge led the instructional design, user experience, and development of a scalable digital learning program. The modules deliver a structured, engaging experience for both students and professionals within UNC’s learning management system. Interactive Knowledge continues to support the program through ongoing enhancements and support.
Challenge
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy required a comprehensive training program to effectively communicate complex topics, such as health equity and social determinants of health, to a diverse audience.
Key challenges included:
- Translating complex and sensitive subject matter into clear, engaging digital learning experiences
- Utilizing multiple media types, including video and interactive tools, to enhance learning
- Designing content that works for both academic and professional audiences
- Structuring multiple modules into a cohesive and consistent learning framework

Approach
Interactive Knowledge served as a strategic partner throughout the project, guiding both the content structure and the design of the learning experience.
The engagement began with discovery and content strategy, including stakeholder interviews and collaboration with subject matter experts. Interactive Knowledge then developed a comprehensive instructional framework that defined how content would be organized, delivered, and reinforced across four modules.
The team focused on creating a learning experience that balances clarity, engagement, and practical application. This included:
- Designing a modular structure that supports consistency across content while allowing flexibility within each topic
- Developing user-centered navigation and interaction patterns within each module
- Creating a unified visual and content system to reinforce key concepts
- Conducting user testing and refining the experience based on feedback
In addition to instructional design, Interactive Knowledge led the development of visual and multimedia assets, including infographics, illustrations, and videos to support comprehension and retention.
