North Carolina History Explorer Launches Statewide for America 250

Interactive Knowledge partnered with the American Battlefield Trust and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ America 250 NC to launch the North Carolina History Explorer, an interactive kiosk experience that brings the state’s history to life for travelers and residents alike.

Timed to coincide with the America 250 celebration, the touchscreen application introduces visitors to North Carolina’s role in the Revolutionary War through the Civil War. Designed for deployment at Welcome Centers and high-traffic public sites, the experience combines accessibility, storytelling, and intuitive navigation to reach a broad audience.

At the heart of the experience is a dynamic, map-based interface that allows users to explore historic locations, events, and themes across three key eras. A guided “Lesson Mode” offers curated journeys for educators and groups, while an ADA-compliant design ensures the experience is inclusive for all users.

The project was delivered in phases, beginning with a flagship installation at the North Carolina Legislative Building, followed by a statewide rollout to Welcome Centers. A flexible kiosk system supports a range of environments, from large-format installations to compact units.

By transforming complex historical content into an engaging digital experience, the North Carolina History Explorer encourages deeper exploration and drives visitation to historic sites—supporting heritage tourism across the state.
