Interactive Knowledge is Redesigning NACCHO’s Roots of Health Inequity Online Curriculum
In 2010 Interactive Knowledge was hired by NACCHO (National Association of County and City Health Officials) to design and produce a large online curriculum titled the Roots of Health Inequity. The courseware was created for public health professionals and has been used by over twenty thousand individuals since it first launched in 2011. The content focuses on a wide range of social justice issues and their effect on the nation’s health. Several interactive activities are included in the curriculum’s six units, including:
- a timeline of the history of public health
- an animated description of the role class plays in health inequity
- Interactive maps and images that explain the role government policies played in unhealthy conditions in northern Manhattan and the disaster following Hurricane Katrina
Interactive Knowledge has hosted and supported the Roots of Health Inequity since 2011. NACCHO obtained funding in 2022 to completely redesign and update the courseware. The new Roots curriculum will be available for use by the public late in 2023. Several new features will be added:
- Upgrade the CMS from Drupal 6 to Drupal 9
- Make the curriculum accessible on mobile devices and fully compliant with WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards
- Update bibliographic content and refine the bibliographic categories
- Update the Voices in the Field to include twenty-four new video clips
- Update and expand the content including new gender equity content, lessons learned from the pandemic and other areas
- Improve user reporting functions
- Update and expand online evaluation tools that test mastery of the content
