Smithsonian "Refresh" Project

Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum and research complex, consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park and nine research facilities. While each unit has its own independent website, the Smithsonian maintains a primary site that acts as a “front door” or portal to all others. This site has millions of users across the world, but had not been updated since 2001.

American Sabor

Latino musicians have influenced traditional genres of music in the United States, while creating their own new musical styles, such as mambo and salsa. “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music,” is a content-rich, multimedia website from the Smithsonian that presents the musical contributions of U.S. Latinos from the 1930s to the present.

Smithsonian Institution’s website is “refreshingly” new and improved

IK worked closely with the Office of the Chief Information Officer and Visitor’s Center to create a new look and a much more practical structure for the Smithsonian’s main website, si.edu. This year-long project included input from Smithsonian visitors, a twenty-member content committee and the team of SI web developers and managers who will keep the massive site up-to-date. IK will continue to maintain the site and add new features throughout 2011.

Smithsonian's American Sabor

American Sabor is a traveling exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) that explains the influence of Latino music on American popular culture. The bi-lingual site will offer lots of music, oral histories, video clips and an in-depth explanation of many styles of music. The exhibition will focus on five American cities and the ways Latino music has made an impact on the local and national music scene.
