I am a native Charlottean (a rare find around here) and hold a degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I began my professional career in my hometown of Charlotte with a large commercial printer who, in partnership with a local advertising agency, produced websites and web applications for local and national clients such as the Charlotte Bobcats, Charlotte Motor Speedway and General Motors. 2009 proved to be a very hard time for the local economy, and my company closed their doors. For every door that closes, another ones opens, and in my search for a local development firm, I happened upon Interactive Knowledge. I was interested immediately because of their location in a historic neighborhood outside of uptown, just three miles from my home.
After getting to know the organization better, I discovered the caliber, creativity, beauty and intrigue behind their work, and knew I had found the team I so wanted to be a part of. After applying and interviewing with Tim Songer, I was given a skills assessment assignment on which I spent several days (and a few long nights) perfecting my work on what felt like a final exam. I was challenged and intrigued by the difficulty of the assignment. I could clearly see that expectations run high at IK for potential team members. My work must have been up to speed because soon after I was offered the job.
My first year here was marked with success. Two out of the three websites we launched were finalists for the People's Choice Webby Awards. Our work for the Smithsonian Institution won a Webby in the Cultural Institutions category while Freedom Riders, a PBS produced documentary, was runner-up in Education.
Aside from this early success, I am also grateful for the opportunity to work with Interactive Knowledge’s talented team, whose efforts bring forth the stunning work for which we are often recognized. It's the creativity, attention to detail, experience, and dedication of each team member that is the key to our successful projects.
The content of our work at IK is both unique and engaging. Many of our client's missions are centered on the ideal of contributing to the greater good of society. Because I passionately stand behind this ideal personally, I feel an even greater sense of connectedness with my work. Often times I learn as much or more from the messages of our clients as I do from producing their sites. I love that feeling.
Another perk of working at Interactive Knowledge is our beautiful, modern, sustainable workspace. Our building and office space foster a comfortable and productive work environment with lofted ceilings, great natural light, and large windows that open into a courtyard which funnels in soothing sounds from a fountain and Koi pond. A stroll around the building's garden or a few stolen minutes in the courtyard is a welcome break from the rigors of a coder's life behind the monitor.
That's my story and that's why I love working at Interactive Knowledge.
