About Interactive Knowledge

Interactive Knowledge is an experienced designer of web sites, kiosks and large-scale interactive projects. We offer our clients a unique approach that includes an emphasis on rich content, award-winning visual design and flawless technology.

We work with an A-list of clients from around the country including PBS, the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and dozens of documentary filmmakers. We produce compelling interactive experiences on the front-end and effective, useful back-end tools that allow our clients to keep their web sites up-to-date with minimal effort.

Interactive Knowledge began in 1991 as an educational publisher of CD-ROM products. Our approach in those early years was very simple: Find advances in technology that created opportunities for our customers. We sold our product line to McGraw-Hill in the late 90’s and moved quickly toward the Internet, never looking back. Of course, our early philosophy still works for us today. Changing trends in technology offers our clients unique opportunities and we are positioned to make sure they take advantage of them.

What Makes Us Unique

Focused on media
We have worked closely with filmmakers and public broadcasters to create new approaches for viewing video on the Internet. We have designed custom players including the first player used by PBS to show every episode in a ten-part series. We have built several video databases that allow clients to continue to add new clips. This searchable database can bring up-to-date media to the top of any site.

Rich content
We have a deep belief in the importance of delivering content in effective and compelling ways. We know that people retain information better and want to share their experience with friends if they are able to interact with the content rather than just see it. Our goal is to provide each person who encounters our work with an interesting and memorable experience.

Original uses of technology
We generate fresh ideas about how technology can be harnessed to serve our clients’ needs. We are not tied to any specific technique or approach to the projects we work on. Our web sites and kiosks introduce new ways of thinking and new techniques for explaining complex concepts. We design unique methods for people to become actively engaged in the content. We have built several original tools for our clients that allows their customers to share content and build effective and sustainable social networks.

Custom Content Management Systems
We have built large-scale custom content management systems for the Smithsonian, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, PBS, and many other clients. Our understanding of how people interact with computers applies to our clients’ staff as well as to their patrons and visitors. We have produced powerful tools for staff members to use in customizing their site. We also have created some unique ways for web site visitors to add content to a site. The results can be incredible.

The Final Word

Interactive Knowledge is not a typical web design firm. If you take a minute to look at the web sites we have produced over the past few years you will notice something unique. Our work is always rich with content that has been placed in a beautifully designed and easy to use context. The projects we work on use new technologies in an appropriate and effective way. And our final results win design awards from our colleagues, repeat business from our clients and many return visits from the people who visit our web sites and kiosks.
